Crime and Punishment
Crime in Rome became very violent after the Punic Wars. It was mainly the lower class doing the crime. Also slaves were brought into Rome after the war. Anyone that did a crime were to be brought up by his accuser. If anyone were to be caught doing a crime or they even confessed that they did it, they were to be punished immediately. If the person said that he was innocent or a loyal person then he would be put into trial. Some crimes were punished using "an eye for an eye". "If a person were to do a certain type of crime such as violence, incendiarism, poison, theft, carrying weapons with criminal intent, possession, purchase or sale of poison, false witness, adultery, and counterfeiting they would be sent into a death penalty without going into trail". "People were either buried alive, thrown off a cliff, or burnt to death". The only type of punishment were for the lower class. The type of punishment would be like not letting them eat or drink if they were a certain distance from Rome. If the person isn't at Rome and did a violent crime, he would be forced to go to Rome, and go into a trial. This made people be really cautious and made them think before they act. Also, they had certain responsibilities so that they can't do anything bad.
